Visual comparison between forward kinematics (FK) and inverse kinematics (IK).

Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Depending on how the movements of the bones affect the body, we divide kinematics into:

1. Forward kinematics (FK): The transformations of the bones follow a logical hierarchy. The chain of bones/controllers causes the "parent" bone to move the "child" bone. That is, if we rotate a shoulder, the entire arm moves; if we rotate the elbow, the arm moves from the elbow to the hand; if we rotate the wrist, the hand moves. It is the perfect mechanism for creating arcs in movements, and it provides great control over the shapes involved in the model's movement.

2. Inverse kinematics (IK): It calculates how the chain of bones/controllers should move (transform), based on the root and the tip (or end) of the chain. This is the mechanism generally used when the model is interacting with objects.
